Tick and flea treatment in Byron Bay

Tick and flea treatment in Byron Bay: why coastal yards get paralysis ticks, the season, what yard and indoor treatments involve, and what to do in between.

Tick and flea treatment in Byron Bay usually means a licensed technician treating the lawn edges, garden beds and shaded parts of the yard where paralysis ticks wait, and treating floors and pet bedding inside if fleas are breeding there. Yard treatment reduces numbers; it does not make a coastal block tick-proof, so mowing, clearing leaf litter and a vet product for pets still matter. Treatment is quoted and done by an independent local provider that reads your enquiry.

Why do Byron Bay yards get paralysis ticks?

The Australian Centre for Disease Control factsheet on paralysis from tick bites (dated November 2022) says the main distribution of the Australian paralysis tick is within 20 km of the coast along virtually the whole eastern seaboard. It prefers moist, humid coastal areas, wet grassy forest and rainforest with plenty of native animals as hosts. The listed hosts include dogs, cats and chickens, native animals such as bandicoots, possums and wallabies, and introduced pests including rabbits and black rats. The factsheet says that where homes sit close to long grass and bushland, it is common to have paralysis ticks in the garden.

That describes much of the Northern Rivers coast. Bandicoots digging in lawns at night and possums crossing fences carry ticks into yards, and dense garden beds keep the ground damp and shaded. The full factsheet is the Australian CDC paralysis from tick bites factsheet.

When is tick season?

The same factsheet says the tick season is often considered to run from July to December, when adult ticks are more common, but that there is a risk of exposure all year. Larvae are most active in autumn, nymphs in winter and adults in spring, and the tick is most active in high humidity, especially after rain. In other words, a treatment in late winter or early spring often makes most sense, with follow-ups through the warmer months if numbers stay high.

The factsheet also says the Australian paralysis tick accounts for over 95% of tick bites in people in eastern Australia, and that tick paralysis is rare in humans.

What does a yard and indoor treatment involve?

Treatment What it covers Notes
Yard tick treatment Lawn edges, garden beds, under shrubs, along fences and paths, around play areas Quoted separately from indoor work; size and density of planting drive the price
Indoor flea treatment Carpets, rugs, floor joins, pet bedding areas, furniture edges Usually needs vacuuming before and after; often a follow-up for hatching fleas
Indoor tick check and treatment Where ticks have come in on pets, in laundries and entries Less common; most ticks are picked up outside
Combined visit Yard plus inside for a household with pets Ask for the areas and re-entry times in writing

A provider will tell you how long to keep children and pets off treated grass and floors. Pets themselves need a product from your vet; a pest technician treats the property, not the animal. Booking the yard treatment and the pet product in the same week gives both the best chance of working together.

Signs you need a tick or flea treatment

  • finding ticks on pets after they have been in the yard, not only after bush walks
  • ticks on people who have only been in the garden
  • flea bites on ankles, or fleas jumping on pale socks when you walk across carpet
  • a pet scratching and chewing constantly despite treatment from the vet
  • bandicoot diggings in the lawn and possums on the roof or fence most nights
  • long grass, leaf litter or dense groundcover close to where children play

If you would like a technician to look at the yard and tell you what is realistic, get a tick treatment quote with the size of the block.

What should a careful provider check or refuse?

A competent technician will:

  • walk the yard and ask where the family and pets spend time
  • ask about vegetable gardens, chickens, fish ponds, rainwater tanks and creeks before choosing products
  • tell you the product name and give you the safety data sheet if you ask
  • explain how long before children and pets can use treated areas
  • tell you what you need to do before the visit, such as mowing and clearing toys from the lawn
  • suggest a follow-up interval rather than promising a single visit will last the season

They should refuse to treat a pet directly, and should tell you to see a vet if a pet shows any sign of tick paralysis. They should also refuse to spray close to a fish pond or tank inlet without precautions.

What can you do between treatments?

Yard work cuts the number of places ticks shelter:

  1. keep lawns mown short, especially along fences and paths
  2. rake up leaf litter and clear dense groundcover near play areas and clotheslines
  3. trim shrubs off the ground so sunlight reaches the soil
  4. keep compost and woodpiles away from the house and play areas
  5. cover the sandpit and check outdoor cushions before use
  6. vacuum floors and wash pet bedding often if fleas are a problem

After time in the garden or bush, check yourself and children carefully. NSW Health Pathology’s article on the paralysis tick, Ticked off: the tiny terror of the bush, gives more practical advice on avoiding bites.

What if a tick is attached to a person or pet?

This page does not give medical or veterinary instructions. If a tick is attached to a person, or anyone has symptoms after a tick bite, seek medical advice. If your dog or cat has a tick or shows weakness, see a vet straight away. The CDC factsheet and health services explain safe removal.

How much does tick and flea treatment cost?

The hipages 2026 cost guide lists an indoor flea and tick treatment at $170 to $330 per treatment as a national average. That band covers indoor work only; yard tick treatments are quoted separately, depending on block size, how much garden there is and whether a follow-up is booked. For other pest bands, see the Byron Bay pest control cost guide.

Local angle: hinterland acreage and coastal estates

Bangalow is almost entirely detached houses in a hinterland town surrounded by farms, according to the .id community profile, and long grass on acreage and paddock edges is classic tick ground. The Bangalow area page has more on the town. In the 2021 Census, 84.0% of dwellings across Ocean Shores, New Brighton and South Golden Beach were separate houses, most with their own yards to look after; the Ocean Shores area page covers that area.

Spiders often turn up in the same shaded garden corners; the spider control page explains that treatment, and a provider may combine both with general pest control on one visit.

Who carries out the treatment?

The yard or indoor treatment is done by an independent licensed pest business, which quotes after hearing about the property and is responsible for the work. This website does not attend or treat.

Next step: describe the yard and the pets

In your enquiry, give the approximate yard size, whether there is bush, long grass or a creek nearby, and what pets you have. Tell the provider which wildlife you see (bandicoots, possums, wallabies), whether fleas are inside as well, and when the yard was last treated. Then send your tick and flea enquiry with your suburb and preferred days.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a Byron Bay yard be treated for ticks?

It depends on the block, the planting and how much wildlife comes through. Many owners book before spring and again during the warmer months. Ask the provider what interval they recommend after they have seen the yard.

Is yard tick treatment safe for children and pets?

The technician should tell you how long to keep children and pets off treated grass and garden beds, usually until surfaces are dry. Ask for the product name and safety data sheet, and mention vegetable gardens, chickens and ponds before the visit.

Will a yard treatment stop my dog getting ticks?

It reduces the number of ticks in the yard but cannot remove every one, especially where bandicoots and possums keep bringing more in. Dogs and cats still need a tick prevention product from your vet.

Why do fleas come back after an indoor treatment?

Flea pupae in carpet and bedding are protected and can hatch after the treatment, so new fleas often appear for a short time. Regular vacuuming helps bring them out, and a follow-up visit is often part of a flea job.

What should I do before a flea treatment inside?

Vacuum all floors, under furniture and along skirting boards, then empty the vacuum outside. Wash pet bedding, pick up toys and items from the floor, and treat pets with a vet product at about the same time so they do not reinfest the house.
